Q: What's the best way to find a great mechanic or car salesman?

Michael says...
The tried-and-true word of mouth method is still a great way to go, either via person or on moderated discussion forums at websites dedicated to certain types of cars or makes. Almost every car on the road has a website with devoted fans of that machine, or company, and members will often be happy to recommend garages or individuals whom they have dealt with that know the product and know how to deal with people, which is key when it comes to both auto techs and salespeople. Beware that some smart dealers are starting to offer “referral fees” or service discounts to customers that get their friends and family to buy vehicles there, so if someone is pushing you to go somewhere and mention their name, there may be some benefit in it for them.
