Q: We are having our hardwood floors sanded and stained but can’t decide between a light or dark stain. Which is the way to go?

Generally, lighter wood tends to set a more casual mood while darker wood tends to be perceived as more formal. Consider the style and finish of the furniture that you already own and the type of furniture that you will purchase when you can afford it. You may also want to consider maintenance when determining stain colour and sheen; a high-gloss ebony floor will definitely show dust and Rover’s hair more than a matte chestnut finish.
