There is definitely a trend toward darker woods. The very deep “espresso” finish lends itself to a contemporary look and is being used on many styles of furniture, from transitional (classic pieces with contemporary styling) to Asian imports. Mixing very dark with very blond wood is also a sleek look that works well in modern spaces. If you are planning to buy “keeper” furniture, try a rich mid-tone (chestnut or slightly deeper) for a more timeless look.
