Q: How do we make the most of our small, urban backyard?

Tamara says....
First, determine the functional spaces that are needed by your household and allot an area for each of them (such as barbecuing, dining, lounging and outdoor storage). Then decide what you would like to do with the remaining space, if any (perhaps a garden, water feature or small patch of grass). The space will appear larger if your eye gently meanders from the front to the back, so keep it interesting. Consider adding a curve to your pathway, from the garden to the shed and to the edge of the garden (no matter how small). Use plants of varying heights and colours, and add garden lighting. For a touch of coziness, use an arbour over the garden gate, an outdoor area rug under the patio table, a hanging lantern over the patio table or cascading flowers on the shed or fence beside your dining area.
