Are Your Red Walls Making You Hungry?  

Although most people think the paint colors they use in their home is about personal taste and what looks good to the eye, it actually goes deeper than that.

Certain colors in different rooms can actually have an affect on how you feel.

"Any room can evoke a different feeling," says Margarida Oliveira, interior designer from Chic Décor. This is not to say one color will do the same for everyone.

"It’s usually a group of colors and each individual person is different," says interior designer Kate Davidson, from Kate Davidson Design.

Oliveira explained that many people will use the same color scheme throughout their house out of fear that they don't know what to pick. "You always have to be careful if everything is neutral because then it becomes boring," says Oliveira, "a lack of motivation will make you feel 'blah' basically." If colorful walls are too big of a step to bring life into your home, there are other alternatives to bring out that color. "You could paint all your walls beige but if your sofa or your coffee table have a lot of color in that then it will make it much more exciting," says Davidson.

Simple things like finding it hard to relax in your own bedroom could be resolved by a simple solution, changing the wall color. "Cool and neutral colors go best to make you feel calm and relaxed in your bedroom," says Oliveira, "A light blue or lavender, nude or beige." So if you like the idea of using color to create an emotionally healthy home, you should first consider the functions of each room and what you want to bring out in them.

1. Living room: Try and use warm tones like yellows, oranges, or earth tones like browns and beige's because they stimulate conversation, makes you feel warm and comfortable.

2. Kitchen: This is a great room for reds and yellows, as it helps to feel comfortable and stimulate conversation. But beware of red if you are watching your weight, "Red usually opens up appetite," says Oliveira. This could be why many restaurants use the color red in their dining areas.

3. Bedroom: This is a place people go to relax so focus on cool colors such as blue, green, and lavender. These colors can be good choices to help create a calming atmosphere.

4. Bathroom: A bathroom should represent cleanliness and purity but can also be seen as a place for relaxation. Blues, greens, and other cool colors give that relaxed feeling with a sense of freshness that is perfect for a bathroom.

5. Office: This room is used for concentration to get your work done, so most color consultants agree that green is a great choice; it’s a good color to be surrounded by for a long period of time since it represents nature and makes you feel content.
