Q: Is a C-section okay instead of a natural birth?

Lezlie says...
It depends. Dr. Donald Davis, a practising obstetrician/gynaecologist and past president of The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecol-ogists of Canada (SOGC), says that if you opt for an elective Caesarean section over a normal vaginal birth, “You’re going to get into more problems and more difficulties.” Like? Increased blood loss in the mother, potential infection and a risk of the placenta attaching along the C-section scar in future pregnancies. On the other hand, if there are health issues with the mother—such as toxemia, pregnancy-related high blood pressure, unmanaged diabetes, severe kidney disease or severe cardiovascular problems—problems with the placenta or other factors that might compromise the health of the mother or baby, Davis says that an indicated C-section might make sense. But as a matter of deciding whether it should be vaginal or Caesarean, the SOGC supports normal vaginal births, he says.
