It's a development that's been cooking for about fifty years too long -- but the Easy-Bake oven is no longer being marketed as a 'girl's toy'. Starting next spring, the traditional pink casing will be replaced with the 'gender neutral' options of blue, silver and black, said manufacturer Hasbro.
The best part of this story is how this change came about. A four year-old boy wanted an Easy-Bake oven for Christmas, but his tween sister McKenna Pope was dismayed to find she could only get it in girly colours. Knowing there's nothing manlier than a guy who knows his way around some pre-packaged brownie mix, she launched an online petition, protesting the sexist undertones of the marketing strategy. Within days, she had 44,000 signatures.
Now that she's had such success in the culinary toy world, we have another mission for Miss Pope: how about a Barbie who actually vaguely resembles a human being?
