"My family maintains a tradition of naming our pets after the British Royal family—which is a bit bizarre since we’re not British and have absolutely no affinity to the monarchy!!"

Photograph of cat.On how they met...their pet!
My folks and I (Sion) were both looking to extend our respective families, so we went to the home of my dad’s receptionist, whose cat recently had a litter of kittens. (I hadn’t met James at the time and just moved into my own apartment.) My mom came out of the house with one grey kitten in each arm. She handed me Fergie and gave his brother, Tory, to my sister—the rest is history!!

On why they wanted a cat:
I have always grown up with animals, so it was natural that I would have one as a companion in my adult life. Being a single guy (at the time), I thought that a cat would be a lot less responsibility and I’d be able to stay out later, guilt free. Unfortunately, Fergie turned out to be quite dependent on human company and my guilt only grew. While the Kennedy’s weekend in Cape Cod, in the early years, Fergie would weekend at my parents’ place in Thornhill, Ont., so he could roam about in a bigger house and also play with his brother.

On picking a name:
My family maintains a tradition of naming our pets after the British Royal family—which is a bit bizarre since we’re not British and have absolutely no affinity to the monarchy!! When I got Fergie, I felt it important to respect tradition, so we named “her” after Sarah Ferguson, since we thought he was a she at the time. It wasn’t until his first visit to the vet that we found out our little girl was actually a boy—who would henceforth be known as Ferguson.

On how their pet has brought them closer together:
James has become Fergie’s adopted daddy. At first, Fergie wanted nothing to do with him, but James has won Fergie’s love and respect. How did he do it? James is now responsible for feeding him and maintaining the litter box. The way I figure it, I had Fergie for two years on my own, so James has a lot of parental duties to catch up on! Which is why he’s now charged with looking after Fergie’s every whim.

On their funniest memory of Fergie:
We were getting ready at my parents’ house to go for Passover dinner. My dad had made a shepherds pie and placed it on the vestibule while he tied his shoe. A weekending Fergie was feeling a little rambunctious and decided to jump on the pie (which had no cover). We were already running late, so my dad took a spoon and removed the area where the paw print was, leaving a gaping hole in the middle (which we never explained away to our dinner hosts). We took it to the Passover dinner and served it to the family, unbeknownst to them what had transpired earlier. Shhhh… don’t tell!
