How to Throw a Clothing SwapTrade clothes with friends for a new seasonal wardrobe without breaking the bank. Here’s how it’s done:

Illustration of clothing hanging on a rack in silhouette.

• First things first: Send out invites to five or six of your closest friends (who are also all about the same size) and make a party out of it. This is supposed to be fun, and there’s nothing better than shopping on the cheap with a glass of wine in hand.

• When unloading your own wardrobe, don’t toss in those items that are too worn, need mending or that are clothes you would never, ever wear. That’s just mean. Select clothing that you still like—but have grown tired of.

Organize clothes by type (pants in one section, shirts in another) and hang on racks. Don’t mound everything together in one pile; you will elicit mass hysteria. Believe me, I discovered that at my first (and last) Chanel sample sale. Never again.

• Any clothing or accessories that don’t make the shopping cut, give to charity. That way, everybody wins!
